How Working Out In My Basement with Home Gym Equipment Changed the Way I Got in Shape

Not too long ago, before the thought of owning any home gym equipment, I used to work out at the local fitness club. I would commute about 20-30 minutes (depending on the traffic) just to get there. Since I like to be time efficient, I would arrive at the gym already dressed and ready to hit the weights (I mainly used free weights, although on occasion I would use some commercial fitness equipment like a Nautilus pec-dec machine).

Because my schedule only allows me to go to the gym around 6-7:00 PM, I had to workout during the busiest time of the day.

I don’t know about you, but if I have a plan already set, I don’t like it being changed. For example, if I have an exercise routine written down to workout my legs, (which would start off with squats, followed by leg extensions and hamstring curls), and I go to the gym expecting to do my leg workout, I don’t like anything getting in the way of the routine.

But often at the fitness clubs I find myself having to wait to use an exercise machine, or find alternative exercises, just because there’s someone using the piece of fitness equipment that I planned on using! And often times, there would be someone else already in line to use that equipment!

After months of having to alter my workout routine on the fly almost every I’m at the health club, I decided I had enough.

I cancelled my membership, and slowly reinvested the money towards building a home gym.

Since then, the results and benefits have been phenomenal. I don’t need to travel and fight traffic for 20-30 minutes to workout. I don’t have to wait in line for someone to finish using a leg press machine or any other equipment, and I don’t have to alter a preplanned workout routine in order to get my exercise and stay within a busy schedule.

If you’re commuting to a fitness club, find yourself waiting in line for an exercise machine, and find yourself moving from equipment to equipment because the one you want to use is being taken up by someone, consider a workout at home. You won’t regret it.
