Some people will say that the key to home gym safety is practicing common sense while working out. Common sense, ironically, is typically uncommon, but nonetheless, knowing some basic safety precautions while performing your home workouts can mean the differences between an injury free workout to something accidental like dropping a weight plate on your big toe. Here are some safety guidelines to keep in mind when exercising at home:
Wear Shoes When Working Out With Free Weights
Since you’re working out at home, you might feel comfortable to exercise weight free weights while barefoot. Don’t do this! Losing grip of a dumbbell, barbell or a weight plate is possible, and when the weight falls, it can potentially land on your foot and break your foot or toes. Wearing shoes will add some protection to your feet and toes, so wear shoes while exercising, even at home.
Use A Spotter
Especially when you’re lifting heavy weights, having a spotter spot you during the exercise is a must. Bench presses, dumbbell presses, and squats are just some of the exercises that require a spotter for safe lifting.
Make Sure the Collars Are On Tight
When you’re using a barbell, it might be tempted to just slap on the weight plates and forget about securing it with safety collars. The safety collars ensure that the plates don’t fall off if the barbell becomes off balanced. Attaching safety collars only takes a few seconds, and can prevent any unnecessary accidents from happening.
When working out in your home gym, be sure to exercise safety precautions to avoid being injured!
