Home Gym Cable Systems

Home gym cable systems are constant resistance devices. This indicates that the resistance of the weight does not change during the course of the exercise. In other words, the weight remains the same at the beginning of a movement compared to the end of the exercise.

Home exercise equipment that is based on a cable system can be found in home gyms that includes a weight stack. The weight stack provides the resistance, and there is a wire that runs from the weight, around a pulley and to the bar (or lifting device). When you perform an exercise on this type of home gym, you lift the weight by pulling on a cable the runs over the top of a pulley that is attached to the weight stack.

The resistance is constant only if the pulley is perfectly round. Some home gyms and commercial exercise machines are based on a variable resistance device. This is accomplished with a lopsided pulley, or the offset cam system. As you exercise, the resistance changes on this equipment by naturally altering the weight. Examples of offset cam exercise equipment can be found on the Universal DVR, some Nautilus and Paramount gyms.
